The trend of increasing irregular crossings at external EU borders in 2015 is unprecedented. So far this year over 593,000 people have arrived by sea onto southern European shores. The largest number has come via Greece (454,000) then Italy (136.000) with smaller numbers arriving in Spain (3,000) and Malta (105).
